German Online Gambling Law Rejected

The European Commission has given the German Gambling Law the red flag. The law was rejected because, according to the EU, the law violates the laws of gambling formed by the EU. However the EU has offered the German government an extended consultation period for another month so that the German states can amend those aspects of the law which it believes to be problematic.

If the German government fails to do so in the stipulated time the EU may initiate infringement proceedings which could lead to a referral to the European Council of Justice and eventually lead to financial penalties. One of the primary reasons for the rejection of the German proposal by the EU was because of the discrepancies that arose with regards to online sports betting and online casino bonuses.

While the proposal claims to open the market for online sports betting to online operators from other EU member states, it also very clearly protects the interests of the German state monopolies. The number of licenses that were planned to be issued was limited to just seven and the state monopolies would be exempted from the licensing process. Let’s hope that the German government gets their act together in time.
